hotmail account ...confused?

i have added a hotmail account to my outlook, i want to use this as my
default email. My outlook is slow now and when clicking on 'inbox' to read
new emails it always take me to the hotmail website instead of outlooking
receiving my mail. Is there anyway i can change this, i have windows XP.
 
which version of outlook are you using?
