hooking my printer up to windows xp

I just bought a new computer and am trying to hook my old
printer to it. It does not print right. My old computer
was windows 98...can someone help me?
 
It's kind of difficult to provide any hints without additional information.

For example, what make and model of printer, what does "not print right"
mean exactly?
