Home Networking Problems

Guest

I have 2 computers both running XPHome – SP2. They are connected via a hub.
Both have access to the internet but recently I lost the network access
between the computers. Both computers can see the other but when I click on
the other computer it can see the drives but gets the following error:

“Logon Failure
-The user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computerâ€

The only information I can find on this error refers to “Telnet Users†and
not having the access set up correctly. This is not something that I ever set
up previously.

I have both computers password protected but previous to this problem it
would just ask for the password and then grant access to the shared files.

In addition to this problem “C2†has also just recently lost communication
with the printer installed on C1. This happened at least 1 month after I lost
the access to shared files. I have tried re-installing the printer on C1 but
when you add a network printer to C2 it cannot see any printers on C1.

I double checked all the “sharing†that I could think of but I am stumped.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Robert - Thank you for your input but under Administrative Tools I cannot
find Local Security Settings ...

The only Icons I have are: Component Services, Data Sources, Microsoft .Net
Config, Perfomance, Computer Management, Event Viewer, .Net Wizard, Services.

Can you direct me ...

Thanks

This specific problem has been documented in other discussions in this forum.
Most recently, in Topic "share printer on home network through router" on 1/6,
Steve Winograd detailed a workaround for XP Home, which seems to work.

The workaround is kind of involved, but I would hope that you will get results
if you follow it carefully. If you could please let us know when you try it,
and if its successful, we may be able to help others when necessary.

Thankyou Chuck - you pointed me in the right direction. Eric Cross' response
to the posting "Share printer on home network through router" posted 6 Jan 05
almost completely solved my problems.

From PC1 I followed the directions as outlined above and now PC2 can now
access the printer installed on PC1 and share files from PC1 but PC1 still
has no access to the share files on PC2. PC1 can see PC2 as a network
location but gets the following message when trying to access it:

PC2 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network
resourse. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions.
Access is Denied

I have tried removing the share and then adding the share to select files on
PC2 but with no success.

Any more ideas?? Thanks

Thanks for the update. So your problem one way was fixed, now you have a second
problem the other way. This one could have a couple causes.

First, make sure that the Guest account is enabled, on each computer. Enable
Guest, with Start - Run - "cmd", then type "net user guest /active:yes" in the
command window. Set the password for Guest, with Start - Run - "control
userpasswords2". Set an identical password on both computers.

If that doesn't help, check for a browser conflict between the two computers..
I"m not talking about Internet Explorer here. The browser is the program that
allows any computer to see any other computer on the LAN. On a 2 computer LAN,
you should have only one browser.

Make sure the browser service is running on one of the computers. Control Panel
- Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser, and the
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, services both show with Status = Started. Disable the
browser service on the other computer.

After checking / disabling / enabling as above, power all computers off to reset
the browser settings on each. Then power the two back on.

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers (I'm not talking about
Internet Explorer here) you have in your domain / workgroup, at any time.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305

You can download Browstat from either:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded
file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command
window, by "browstat status". Make sure all computers list the same master
browser.
For more information about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188001
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=231312
<http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winntas/deploy/prodspecs/ntbrowse.mspx>

If no help yet, provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is
NOT checked!, copy and paste entire contents into your next post.

Oh yes, you do have the File and Printer Sharing exception enabled in Windows
Firewall, right?

Yup. The problem's becoming clearer.

You've got IPX/SPX, and IPV6 aka Teredo Tunneling aka Advanced Networking, on
both computers. Get rid of all that please from the list of items under Local
Area Connection Properties. You only need the following items in the list:
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler (optional)
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

If you need IPV6, you can install it later. After you get file sharing working.
You should not need IPX/SPX at all.

Hi Chuck

Followed your instructions and lost all communication between computers.

PC1 cannot see PC2 at all
PC2 cannot see PC1 at all as well can no longer access the printer installed
on PC1

I thought maybe with the changes to the Network Properties that I should run
through all the instructions again, which I have now done. Nothing changed.

When I ran the browstat again on both computers ... PC1 now shows Master
Browser as "HER". On PC2 it says "browsing not active on domain" and "master
name cannot be determined from GetAdaptorStatus"

Any ideas? Thanks

OK, you've gotten rid of the excess protocols, so now let's try and solve the
problem.

You have the protocols installed:
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler (optional)
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Are you running NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (Local Area Connection - Properties - TCP/IP
- Properties - Advanced - WINS) on each computer?

Any firewalls on either computer (now or in the past)? XP SP2 Windows Firewall
enabled? Is the File and Printer Sharing exception enabled?

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer, and lets diagnose the
problem.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is
NOT checked!, copy and paste entire contents into your next post.

Hi Chuck

Ok - I checked that both computers have NetBios over TCP enabled.
Here are the ipconfi files.

<SNIP IPConfigs still showing Teredo Tunneling>

You're still running Teredo Tunneling, aka IPV6, on both Her and Him. Do you
need access to IPV6 addresses?

Please start by un installing IPV6, aka Advanced Networking, from the list of
items under Local Area Connection Properties. You only need the following items
in the list:
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler (optional)
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

If you need IPV6, you can install it later. After you get file sharing working.

Hi Chuck

Ok - I think I got it ....

I thought that by unchecking the boxes it would not install Teredo but
everytime I closed the Network Connection Properties and went back in it was
checked off again. I have now unistalled everything but the 4 items listed
and Teredo is now gone ... even after resetting.

What next? Thanks Eva

Eva,

Post updated ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is
NOT checked!, copy and paste entire contents into your next post. Identify
operating system (by name, version, and SP level) with each ipconfig listing.
If you're using dynamic ip addresses (as most are), don't reboot anything.

Eva,

From the IPConfigs:

Node IP Address Subnet Mask Subnet Gateway
Her 24.86.185.136 255.255.252.0 24.86.184/22 24.86.184.1
Him 24.86.181.105 255.255.252.0 24.86.180/22 24.86.180.1

<Light coming on in my head!> OK, that's why you had IPX/SPX loaded. But it
wasn't working.

Try again. Start with Steve Winograd's instructions.
Windows XP Network Protocols:
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_protocols.htm

Why are you paying for two ip addresses? Get a NAT router, use TCP/IP, and one
address. TCP/IP is the standard protocol for Windows XP, and you'll find a lot
more experts.

Hi Chuck

Ok I have run through the instructions from other posting.

PC1 can still only see PC1. PC2 gets the following error message now: "The
list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available".

As for the 2 ip addresses: I don't pay for 2 ... my DSL/Cable connection
supplies us with 2 addresses at no additional charge. As for the router ...
yes we are looking at upgrading some of our equipment and going to a wireless
router is one of the upgrades we will be making ... but we had put it off
until we resolved the current sharing issues that suddenly started.

I have included the ipconfig's again just in case you needed them since I
ran "resource tools" instructions

Eva,

OK, it's good to have the ipconfig's as a reference point, but they are
IPConfig's, which means that they report IP Configurations only. No IPX/SPX.

Let's take a look at the browser situation again, from both computers.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "browstat status >c:\browstat.txt" into the command
window - Open Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is NOT checked!, Open
c:\browstat.txt, copy and paste into your next post.
