Home network between desktop and notebook

I'm trying to network two computers through an ethernet connection. I follow
the networking wizard, but in the end it always says that the cable is
unplugged. The cable is definitely plugged in and I'm pretty sure it's not
broken. Do I need a hub to connect the two computers, or is there some step
I'm missing?

If you are connecting two computers together without a hub or switch, you
need a CROSS cable and give each computer a unique ip address.
