I ran HijackThis because I installed a new printer, and it seems to have
left 'traces' all over my computer, and I fear which to remove; moreover,
Avast keeps throwing pop-up ads and I would like to remove those files.

Due to being vision impaired I can't tell which to remove from my HijackThis
scan. Is there an email address I could forward it to for advice?

Thank you.

Unless I misunderstand your post, HiJackThis, while it's an excellent tool,
isn't appropriate for your needs.

If an installed printer driver is misbehaving - uninstall it.
If Avast is dunning you with popups for subscriptions, uninstall it and
replace it with something that doesn't - or keep it and pay the fee.

Hijackthis doesn't install anything, so there are no traces of it to
remove.

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware
detection programs:

Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/
SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/

They can be uninstalled later if desired.

THEN, troubleshoot any remaining issues by supplying more detailed
information.

I am well aware of that; however, it evidences files not needed - I cannot
tell which to uninstall, 'fix,' or leave there, and cannot access the groups
to review my report. I have used it for several years, and I do run
everything - there's no problem with a Trojan, virus, malware, et al . . .
Thank you

Then, if you could please rephrase so that your meaning is clear. What,
exactly, has left 'traces' all over your computer? The printer installer?
HiJackThis?

HiJackThis isn't an appropriate tool for removing printers or other software
installs.

HijackThis also leaves no "traces" of itself other than a log file, it's
just an executable within one folder.

I'll send it to you.

contrary to everyone else,
hijack logs can be helpful
tools and diagnosing issues
with performance.

AMEN TO THAT! Thank you.

Performance was not the issue as per the OP's post. I have no idea what he\she is
talking about. Hijack this has nothing to do with her issue as the OP described it

the o.p. mentioned three
variables.

with experience one can
read between the lines.

Peter, were we all as savvy as you are, we would not need this NG.

Nothing to do with Hijack This. Uninstall the Printer driver and install one that is
an updated one for your printer

It must be stated that the HijackThis utility must be used with
extreme caution. It is not a general clean-up tool as it will remove
the select "thing" with no questions asked, usually. Hijeckthis is
usually used to clear up malware / spyware "infestation" that most
"advanced" removal tool may ignore.

Most printer install routine tend to correctly install itself and
install the additional software with a correct "removal" entry in Add/
Remove Program "Control Panel" applet. You do need to specify which
printer you installed.

Avast does not display "pop-ups." It is a "good" anti-virus system.
You may have some other type of software that "hides" itself as either
Avast or other application. Locate, install and run either
MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware Free or SuperAntiSpyware Free.

Also, if you just installed the printer, you could run the Windows XP
"System Restore" application (not the PC's manufacturer's system
recovery system!) The "System Restore" could usually "revert" the
Windows XP "settings" to a time prior to when you installed the
drivers.

SILLY ONE! New printer. It, of course, has hidden files that open my port(s)
and go out to the net for updating, data outflow, and whatever else, as well
as other 'files' I have no idea what they have to do with PRINTING.

Thank you, though.

well....., it's possible.

you see makers are getting
pretty clevor now a days.

any software that is allowed
to automatically search for
updates has the propensity
to act as spyware as well.

remember sony a while back
with their cd writing software?

it was actually spyware and
when it was discovered by that
guy from sysinternals (who now
works for microsoft) it became
a black eye for sony.

a somewhat honest company
will let you know in the small
print of the terms and conditions
that they will ascertain your data
in return for using their freeware.

Bravo! A wise contribution - thank YOU!

Most often, hopefully all the time, such information is in the EULA . . .
such a Google uses, and that Twitter (deferring to Google maintaining all
records!). Not nice.

That's why I don't like threads of programs hiding, in any way, on my
computer. I want to know when a port is open, for any reason.

Thank you!

Well it's a red and white Luke Firewalker full screen popup all the time. Is
that Avira or Avast?? ARE they the same. Sorry.
