computer lock-up

Recently, my 2 year old computer started intermittently locking-up. The
display freezes and the mouse pointer does not move. The only way to reboot
is to remove and reapply power. Then it comes up normal and may operate for
a day or only 30 minutes. When it locks-up, Ctrl-Alt-Delete does not work
nor does the power button on the case.

I have run a google search and everything says hardware problem, software
conflict, or driver so I have tried the suggestions. I have avast and have
run av scans, Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, HiJackThis, Chkdsk, sfc/scannow, removed
s/w, run the ms memory test, and checked the temperature. I have looked for
updated drivers and found one that I updated. Nothing has fixed it. Also,
the event log does not show anything before the event.

eMachine c1844, AMD 1800+, 256 ram, winxpsp2 with latest update.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, David

I used to have a laptop do this to me. My situation went away when I got rid
of Win2K for XP and got a new hard drive.

May want to eithe rlook into software or hard drive issues. To rule out
hard drive, go to your PC manufacturer's age and see if they have a Hard
Drive diag tool.

Have you tried the configuration utility? Start>run>type "msconfig" (w/o"")
click ok When the utility opens tik the "Selective Startup" option circle
and uncheck all the boxes except "Load Startup Items" click "apply" then
"close" and restart your computer as instructed. Let your system run like
this to see if it repeats the freeze-up. If it does~> then your problem is
likely a program that starts with windows and you can further eliminate
possibilities by unchecking startup programs under the "startup tab" If it
doesnt freeze~> then you check the next box up "Load System Services" and
again restart your computer. continue in this manner until you have isolated
the cause.

Then again it may be a hardware problem...

This is a new post after a week of trying things to find the source of my 2
year old computer intermittent locking-ups. The display freezes and the
mouse pointer does not move. The only way to reboot is to remove and reapply
power. This can happen after running 24 hours or after 1 hour. It has never
happen at boot.

Several suggestions were made and I tried all; reformat and reinstall,
remove all unneeded s/w, test the hdd, etc. The problem still exists. Also,
the event log does not show anything before the event.

I have cleaned the fan and filters. The system temp runs 40 deg C and the
cpu runs 47 deg C.

The latest puzzlement is when I run the ms ram memory test in both normal
and in the T mode. This is run from the A drive and the hdd and winxp are
not used. No memory error is identified but often, the bars move slow or
stop and the rotating flags are slow or stopped even if the bars still move.

Any suggestions? RAM, mb, cpu, or?

Thanks, David
