Hijacked or virus?

when I do a send receive, the message in the bottom right corner says sending
xxx number of messages. depending how long since I last clicked send/received
it can be anything from 2000 upwards to 800000 messages !!!. it only takes a
few seconds and then it dissapears before receiving my mail.

Obviously there is nothing in my sent box to reflect this amount of messages
sent. any ideas please guys?
 
Not without any configuration details.
