Hidden file on desktop - desktop.ini

There is this file on my desktop called desktop.ini.
It's a hidden file - and when I open it with notepad the contents are:

[LocalizedFileNames]
Windows Media Player.lnk=@C:\WINDOWS\inf\unregmp2.exe,-4

What's it for?
Why is it there?
Can it be deleted?

You probably do not want to delete it.

It is letting Windows save various bits of information to make sure that you
get parts of the view the way you customized them to. Like any file, you
still want to run Anti-virus on them though.

Thanks - but I don't actually have anything on my desktop.
When I bought the machine there were various shortcuts etc. on it -
but I got rid of everything except the Recycle Bin.
So is it still necessary?

It is providing for a facility in Media Player that you may well not
want. As a start, rename it - if WMP complains in a way you do not
like, you can then restore it

Thanks Alex - I'll try that.
If you have time to comment, could you tell me what facility it might be
providing?
