Hibernation

My longer will no longer hibernate after receiving Windows XP security
updates. A blue screen appears, which says, "preparing to hibernate," but
nothing happens.

This happened on 8/29/2008 (the date of the updates) and they were KB952287,
952954, 952376-v2, 951066, 950974, 950762, 951698, 951748, 946648, 951376.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have checked the options under
Power settings, to make sure I had all the boxes checked properly. Using
Windows XP.

Ha! I meant my computer will no longer hibernate! I have read all the
posts, checked my drivers and Power options. I have 512 MG and I understand
you need 510 to hibernate. I don't have Powerquest Datakeeper or Alcohol
120 (as some posters did). I am using Norton Antivirus.

Any help, anyone?

Check to see whether or not you have a restore point earlier than 8/29.
If so, restore.

Thank you for responding. I thought about that, but since that is more than
2 1/2 months ago, I'm afraid I might loose some data that I need. Also, I'm
not sure how to do a system restore - I guess I could figure it out.

What?!! Are you kidding? What's wrong with Norton? What other anti-virus
software would you recommend? Do you think Norton is causing the problem?

I don't know for sure what's causing your problem, but I'll throw in my
agreement with "Unknown." Norton is the *worst* security software on the
market. Instead I recommend NOD32, if you are willing to pay for an
anti-virus product, or Avast if you want a free one. Both are much better
than Norton.

But I had Norton for way longer before the problem started. It appeared to
begin after Microsoft downloaded an automatic update. The problem started
the day after.

I don't have a solution, just a little info:

There are a lot of Norton and McAfee bashers here, FWIW. Unfortunately
most of them just blindly attribute everythng to it rather than have
anything to back it up.

I and most of the people here (relatives, friends, etc.) run Norton AV
and have had zero problems w/r to any recent updates or with Norton in
particular. Some have NAV, I have Systemworks, and a couple have a
suite I forget the name of right now but all contain NAV.
You can pretty easily tell whether Norton is a problem though by
disconnecting from your modem or turning the modem off to protect
yourself, and either turn it off or uninstall it, to see if Hibernate
starts to work again. I think it's unlikely but it doesn't hurt
anything to prove it to yourself. If it does help though, I would much
appreciate your coming back and telling us.

It IS possible there was something in the updates that changed things
though. Myself, I've lost the Hibernate ability completely; it's just
not there when I go to shut down and it happened after, but I'm not sure
how long after, the set of updates you mentioned. And it's not the
first time.
Hibernate is kind of a strange duck for some reason. In my
experience, if you don't use it for a long period of time it often quits
working; no idea why. So unless I have a specific need for it I don't
use it much on this desktop computer. It works first time everytime on
the laptop though and I use it a lot there, and it's set up identically
to my desktop w/r to security applications. . It's almost like a use it
or lose it kind of thing.

Now it's my turn to bash Norton et al though: I do plan to leave them
when my subscription expires, but because of their cost, not any
operational problem. Unfortunately no single application I can find yet
(that I trust, that is) can replace it, so I'm looking at sort of a step
backwards in having to replace it with more than one program to get the
same benefits I consider important to me.

PS - Just found in my logs; my Hibernate stopped working after those
updates, but also, a few days later, I added another Gig of RAM to this
machine. That's two changes now; Updates and more RAM. Hmm ...

It's not for nothing that both "Norton" and "McCafee" each have six letters.
You'll note that "XPHome" also has six letters (but not "XP Pro"). Put them
together, and, well, there you are...

You are a puzzle. First you say you and your friends have never had a
problem with Norton. In your following words
you say you lost hibernate ability. These posts are full of Norton problems
and you just won't accept that.
Just read (you want back up) how many posters have solved their problems by
deleting Norton products.
