Hibernation begins and then fails

I am running a Toshiba Tecra M3 with 2 GB of RAM and Windows XP Professional
with all service packs and updates installed.

When I choose hibernate from the shutdown menu my laptop starts the
hibernation process and the screen goes blank. The laptop does not power off
and it does not begin writing to the hard disk. Then the laptop screen comes
back on and my desktop displays as if I hadn't started to hibernate at all.

In addition, the hibernation option is no longer available on the shutdown
menu (or anywhere else for that matter). The options for standby, log off,
restart and shut down are all still available, but hibernation has vanished.
If I restart windows the hibernation option returns, but if I try to use it
the same problem recurs.

I've browsed through the recent entries in the event viewer, but I didn't see
any errors that seemed to correspond to the hibernation problem. Did you
have something specific in mind?

Yes, I have, but once the problem occurs the shift key no longer toggles
between suspend and hibernate.

It almost sounds like you are actually crashing and restarting. Is
AutoRestart turned off in System Properties, Advanced, Startup and
recovery? There IS an issue with Hibernation and > 1GB ram but that
gives a resources error.
