Hibernation will not enable

Luthe N.

I had a harddrive crash a few months ago after a registry problem and had to
reinstall XP (SP2). Since then I have not been able to get the hibernate
function to work. Standby still works, and hibernate still appears on the
options when I go to shut down but it's grayed out so I can't select it. When
I go into power options to enable it I get an error message that says
'windows cannot enable hibernate because it is being used by another
process'.

When the crash & reinstall happened I reinstalled all my drivers from the
manufacturer's website so I know I have them all (my wireless connection
wouldn't work until I did). I also have 17 GB free space on my HDD right now
so that's not a problem either.

I tried looking for the hiber.sys file in my c:\ drive and did change the
search options to include hidden files and folders but so far no luck
finding it. I would really like to have my hibernation fuction back. Anybody
have any ideas?

Try running this command:

%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll SetSuspendState S4

This manually forces the hibernate state.

If this works, you can put a shortcut on the desktop with this command as
the target, thereby circumventing the OS choice.
