Hibernate questions

Hello,

I added RAM to my laptop recently, and have been seeing strange behavior
regarding hibernate. (It used to work consistenly.)

When I select Hibernate from the Shutdown list of options, I a message along
the lines of "insufficient resources for API". I have plenty of space on
the disk. Sometimes, Hibernate isn't an option on the Shutdown list.

When I go to Settings->Control Panel->Options, the Hibernate tab doesn't
always appear.

Any ideas about what is going on?

Thanks.

Hi Schemer,

If you expanded your RAM past 1GB, it is a known issue. All you need
to do is go to the Microsoft knowledge base to get the hotfix
number. You can not download the hotfix directly. You the have to
call Microsoft technical support and tell them the hotfix number you
are calling about. They will ask you some questions to determine if
the hotfix is applicable to you. They will then ask for your e-mail
address, and send you a link to download the file.

If you are talking about http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888575/en-us
than 1GB is not when the problem occurs. It is at above 4GB. While
users are buying, building, or upgrading to above 1GB, not many are over
4GB so it is not a good assumption that this is the problem. The more
memory you have, the longer it takes to copy it all into an equivalently
sized file on the hard drive (and to restore the file's contents into
memory on power resume).

Since you actually didn't point at the KB article to which you vaguely
referenced, maybe you were talking about
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888575/en-us. You do NOT have to call
Microsoft. A link is right there in the KB article to get it. Since
the problem arises under high stress, the user could unload some
programs or wait until the host quiesces before putting it into
hibernate mode. This presumes the OP hasn't yet bothered to install
Service Pack 2 which includes this hotfix
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811113/en-us). Why bother with the
effort to install a hotfix than to install a service pack?

Or maybe the problem is the OP is using software that interferes with
hibernation, like http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331506/en-us. Testing
in safe boot mode would help determine if the cause was due to a
software conflict. But then, again, the OP should've updated to Service
Pack 2 by now.

I should have specified that I have sp2 installed. The RAM change was from
1 to 2 gb.

Thanks for the links, I'll look in to them.

Hi Vanguard,

The issue I am talking about starts at 1GB. My zd7010us,
zd8205 and now dv800z, all had the same issue, and once I
downloaded and saved the hotfix, the issue is solved for all
3 machines consistently.

If you can't find the article, e-mail me (the e-mail address
here is valid), and I will send you the file.
