hibernate problem with sp2

when i try to hibernate my computer, sometimes it gives
the message "Insufficient system resources exist to
complete the API."

pre-sp2, this was article #330909. it was supposedly
fixed in xp, but is still happening.

system specs:
ibm thinkpad t42
1.7ghz pentium m dothan
1.5gb ram

whenever the hibernate fails, my system usually has many
applications open. my hibernate file is contiguous, as
reported by my defragmenter, so that is not a problem.

i tried starting a few applications and hibernating, and
then starting some more and trying, and it was sucessful
until i used slightly over 500mb ram. in addition, after
the error message popped up, rundll32 ran for about 10
minutes and used 99% cpu. i started killing all the
services and rundll32 went away when i turned off "remote
access connection manager".

anyone else have a problem remotely like this?

IIWY I'd uninstall SP2. Most of us are recommending that those with
laptops, especially older ones, contact the manufacturer for info on
upgrading to SP2. I would not upgrade until I got an "all clear" from IBM
and links to any IBM-specific drivers which SP2 would require.

Similarly, we've always discouraged laptop owners from formatting and
installing a retail version of Windows until they have the necessary,
laptop-specific files and drivers on hand which will be needed.

this laptop is brand new, t42's were just released.
also, installing that "patch" for xp sp1 doesn't solve
the problem, it still acts the same. i've installed all
the necessary drivers so my install is basically the same
as the ibm preload without all the other stuff they put
on it.

It's seldom a good idea to upgrade in hopes of fixing an existing problem.
As the machine's brand new and still under warranty, what did/does IBM have
to say about the problem?

Again, I would *not* be running SP2 on any laptop until I'd gotten the
all-clear from its manufacturer. The drivers you have now may not be
SP2-compatible.

Good luck, Potsy.
