lost Hibernate & Standby

Somehow, I have lost the ability to either standby or hibernate. The
Standby icon on the shutdown window is greyed out and Hibernate is no longer
an option in the Advanced tab on the Power Options screen. I upgraded to
SP2 three weeks ago, and I think the capability survived the upgrade.

Any suggestions?

EUREKA!!! I am responding late because it took FOREVER to find the fix.
I don't know if you are having the same problem I have had for the last year
and a half but here goes:
I also lost my Hibernate or Standby button. Around the same time, I also had
a virus which I was able to successfully remove. Now I don't know if it was a
coincidence or not but I lost the button around the same time. In addition,
believe it or not, my Outlook slowed down...like when I wanted to delete a
message, it would take a second or two-no other problem. I also noticed in
the System -hardware tab that my video driver had an "!" next to it.
I tried at least 6 times to reload the driver but each time I would get a
"blue screen of death". This would cause me to have to restore, yadda, yadda,
yadda-misery for sure!............anyway several weeks ago I started noticing
some peculiar lines on the display. THE BOTTOM LINE IS MY VIDOE CARD CRAPPED
OUT-I CALLED DELL, THEY SENT A NEW ONE, I INSTALLED IT AND ALL PROBELMS ARE
NOW GONE, INCLUDING THE SLOWDOWN TO OUTLOOK.
If this helps send me LOTS of $$$$$$.
Good Luck!
