Hiberate has become Stand By

J

John

On my PC when I selected "Turn Off Computer on the start button I used to
get 3 options: "Hibernate, Turn Off, Restart". For some reason this has now
become "Stand By, Turn Off, Restart".

I realise that shift will change it - but how can I get Hibernate as the
first choice again as Stand by doesn't work - it just seems to interrupt the
power and it immediately restarts.

Standby, Turn Off, and Restart is normal. To hibernate you use the shift
key. You should repair the 'standby'
problem instead of changing the indications. Try setting standby to 'never'.

Stand By is set in Power Options to "Never"

If used it seems to go to Stand By - but immediately restarts at the log on
screen. - always has.

While I agree with the other responders that you might want to figure out
why standby isn't working on your computer here's a direct answer to your
question. Take a look at this article.

When you click “Turn Off Computer” on the Start menu, the Hibernate button
does not appear in Windows XP or in Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893056

FWIW, I found that the hotfix and registry modifications described in that
article will work in XP Pro SP2 as well as XP Home Edition SP2. If SP3 has
been
installed on either platform, you can skip the hotfix. Just making the
changes
to the registry will result in the Hibernate button appearing in the Turn
Off
Computer box.

Make sure Hibernate is enabled.

Right-click desktop -> Properties -> Screensaver Tab -> Power Button ->
Hibernate Tab. Make sure "Enable Hibernation" is checked.

Also, Hibernation requires that there be as much Disk space available
as you have usable RAM in your computer. Make sure you have sufficient
available disk space.

Hibernate is enabled and works fine - but I have to press shift key to get
the option.

Actually, there's a hotfix available for this if you have SP2 or later.
See:

Thanks made the changes to Registry - nothing changed.
Downloaded and ran the Hotfix - nothing changed.

Will leave it alone

I never found a good fix for this, trying to replace the StandBy button with
a Hibernate one. What I did was create a new shortcut with
"%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe PowrProf.dll, SetSuspendState" (without the
quotes) on the Target line and %windir% on the Start in line. I moved it to
the top of my start menu so I just click on Start, Hibernate. Or you could
just leave it on your desktop, or put it in your Quick Launch tool bar if
you prefer.

You did not say what the condition was prior to your post, nobody
asked you what version of Windows you have and are offering things to
try if they would try them it would become obvious the suggestions of
things to try of course do not work.

Did you used to have a Hibernate button as a fourth option to the menu
and now it is gone or did you replace the Stand By button with a
Hibernate button?

You can add a new Hibernate button and leave the Stand By button
(Stand By is good sometimes). You can also just press the h key on
the shutdown menu on your hibernate compatible system and immediately
hibernate. Saves a hand movement.

To add a new Hibernate button, copy the text below and paste it into
Notepad:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System
\Shutdown]
"HibernateAsDefault"=dword:00000001
"ShowHibernateButton"=dword:00000001

Save the file on your desktop as HibernateButton.reg (or any name
+ .reg)

Double-click or right-click and merge into the Registry.

It is not necessary, but a good ideal to restart your computer to make
sure it works.

If you don't want a Stand By button, that can be arranged too, but
that is not the way it normally works, so how did it get like that in
the first place?

Looked promising - but no change.

I have always only had 3 buttons. But the left one was Hibernate. It is now
Standby. I can Hibernate by using the shift so it must be enabled.

And you can also press the h key for hibernate (s for shutdown, r for

Watch out for the line wraps in my post.

The stuff between the left and right square brackets is all one line:

[HKEY_.......\Shutdown]

Get this working first.

Good job.

Is there any way that you know of to replace the standby button with the
hibernate button on the shutdown screen?

You know, I actually try things sometimes.

Do you have a issue where your buttons do not behave as advertised?

Not me, but the OP did have the problem.
