Hello all

I have a new USB device at hi-speed but I do not have a hi-speed port. Warning notice says I can still use this device provided I add the hi-speed host controller. I have search for this in XP Help and Support but it is not showing. How can I do it?

MENK
Ps I have sent this once but it did not appear in my message body.

You can still use your device with USB 1.1 it will work, but at a much
slower speed.
You can buy a high speed controller at any electronics store for around
$30-60 US (It's a PCI card).
some even come with extra 1394 connections.

Hi-Speed USB peripherals have been hitting critical mass this year, so your
question is not uncommon.

Currently, the USB Specification, Revision 2.0, covers three speeds 480
Mbps, 12 Mbps, and 1.5 Mbps. The term "Hi-Speed USB" refers to just the 480
Mbps portion of the USB Specification.

The term "USB" (Universal Serial Bus) is now generally used to refer to the
slower 12 Mbps and 1.5 Mbps speeds.

Your computer's motherboard likely has support only for the slower "USB"
speeds (version 1.0 or 1.1). This is why you have received the warning
issued by WinXP regarding your specific "Hi-Speed" USB peripheral. The
addition of an "add-on" card to your computer, will give you additional USB
ports that support the "High Speed USB" transfer rate of 480 Mbps.

The key question is what is this USB peripheral that you are trying to use?

For a keyboard, joystick or mouse, the increased speed of "High-Speed USB"
adds NO benefit to your performance. However other products, such as
external hard drives, digital cameras, etc. peripheral performance is
improved with the faster speed of "Hi-Speed USB".

Hello GB & MAP, many thanks for the clarification; I've learned something
new. Mine is the usb hard drive and it is workable.

An external hard drive will be so much faster with USB 2.0. You really
should get a USB 2.0 controller card.

You need a physical addition - get a plug in USB 2.0 controller card.
It is not a matter of a new driver for the existing chips

I have server machine which originally had usb 1.1 ports on it. I added a 6
port usb 2.0 card which is not 2.1 compatible. THe driver instalation manual
says drivers are available as part of xp. However the all ports come up as
slow ports. I cannot see some high speed devices. I tried to down load and
install 2.0 drivers for the card. On boot it does not pick up the 2.0
drivers. I have gone to the device manager and unstalled all the usb
controller drivers and rebooted but it still does the same thing.
It seems to pick the lower speed drivers. I have XP SP2 running.

the device manager listing shows the following:

- Univesal Serial Bus Controller
| ALi PCI to USB OPen Host Controller
| ALi PCI to USB OPen Host Controller
| ALi PCI to USB OPen Host Controller
ServerWorks (RCC) PCI to USB OPen HOst COntroller
Standard ENhanced PCI to USB HOst Controller
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub

When I uninstalled the drivers and manually installed 2.0 drivers it briefly
saw 2.0 drivers but then wehn I rebooted it comes back as 1.1 drivers.

Thanks
Mohan
