HI-SPEED USB Host Controller

Bruce Lawrence

I am trying to figure out how to get my memory stick to work on USB port on
front of my computer.I have one USB in back [1.1?] and one in front [1.1?]
I am running XP Pro with Service Pack 1[534 MHz, 192 MB of RAM If that
matters].
I was told with XP Pro I would automatically have HI-SPEED USB but I don't.
I have 5 USB Controllers listed:
Generic USB Hub
Intel(s) 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
USB Composite Device
USB Mass Storage Device
USB Root Hub
I need the USB Hub because my mouse & keyboard ports do not work.
Any help on how to get Hi Speed free?
Thanks Bruce Lawrence

No.

USB 2.0 requires both software and hardware. If you have an open PCI slot
you can purchase and install a multi-port USB 2.0 card.

However, are you sure that the lack of a USB 2.0 port is your problem? When
you attach the memory stick reader it should be also compatible with USB 1.1
{just slower}. Also, are you sure that your memory stick reader is not USB
1.1? If it is USB 2.0 you should get a message somewhat like a high speed
device is connected to a low speed port.

I have a Sony with a built in memory stick reader. In Device Manager the
memory stick controller has its own entry.

Suggest you check to determine if you need to install a device driver for
your memory stick reader.

USB 2.0 is either on the motherboard (usually) or it's
not. If it is, XP supports it (usually without a driver,
on newer motherboards). If it's not you can purchase an
add-on card, they're cheap. You may have to load a driver
with the add-on card. I don't think 82371 has USB 2.0,
only 1.1. The point is, USB 2.0 is in the hardware, only
support for it is in XP.

Hi Bruce
You will only have USB 2 if you have the hardware for it. In other words,
you will need to have USB 2 components installed (either via a PCI USB 2
card or direct from motherboard if it supports it) for USB2 (high speed) to
work. XP Pro SP1 supports USB 2. If it detects it you should see, among
your USB root hubs etc, a USB *enhanced* device listed.
Good luck.

You only get High speed USB 2.0 *if* your machine has the appropriate
controller hardware. The point about SP1 is that Windows prior to that
did not include the drivers. And if you ran SP1 on an earlier state
with no third party USB 2.0 drivers it will not install them - Catch 22.
They would show as a PCI to USB *Enhanced* Host controller

Go to http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;822603
and take and run the download. If you *do* have the hardware that will
install the drivers - but you may not have it.

Also USB ports in front need an internal cable going to the motherboard
- check it is there and properly plugged in

A USB 2.0 Hub/device would reflect the word "enhanced" as part of the
description in the Device Manager so you apparently do not have that
capability. To add that capability, buy a USB 2.0 PCI Card and install
it in an open PCI slot. You can buy cards will add 2/4/or 5 USB 2.0
[however many you want] jacks on the back of your computer. In this area
these cards are readily available (even at Wal-mart) for $25 to $35.
Install it yourself [tis not rocket science, rather easy] and save a few
bucks. You will then have USB 2.0 enabled jacks [which will be backwards
compatible to USB 1 and USB 1.1 devices] plus you will still have the
two jacks you mention. YOU MUST have Service Pack 1 [SP1 or SP1a]
installed for USB 2.0 and/or Firewire to function.
In ending, what I would really do is to buy a USB 2.0/Firewire dual
enabled PCI Card [35-50 bucks, but a trifle harder to locate] and
install it. I bought a Sandisk Brand card (which was made by NEC) which
added 3 exterior USB 2.0 jacks and 2 exterior Firewire [AKA i-link or
IEEE 1394] jacks PLUS 1 of
each on the interior PLUS a y-adapter to hook it up to the power supply
if you wish. Works just fine. Similar cards Are made by others such as
Adaptec and Belkin.
Hope this helps,
Gene K
