My disc drive doesn't work. When I put in a cd nothing happens. I looked in
"MY COMPUTER" and the icon that says "CD-RW" or something like that is not
even there anymore. What do I do?

Hi Morgana,

First I would suggest rebooting the system and going into your BIOS and
verify that the CD drive is still being detected by the hardware itself. If
it does not appear there, then either a cable has come loose, or your
CD-drive has died.

If the drive is displayed in your BIOS, then you can be sure it is a
software (read "XP") issue, and you can attempt to re-detect it or reinstall
the driver when you log back in to XP.

Also, I would suggest going into 'Device Manager' and seeing if any of your
hardware components have yellow exclamation marks next to them indicating a
hardware issue. If there is one of those by the CD-Drive (if it is listed)
or on the IDE controllers, then the built-in troubleshooter should be able
to walk you through repairing or updating the affected driver files.

Good Luck,

Hi Morgana,
My computer will do this from time to time.
The Fix:

Shutdown computer
disconnect cd drive IDE cable
boot computer to decktop
shutdown computer
reconnect cd drive IDE cableboot
computer to desktop
see if cd showed back up

Your mileage may vary

Good luck
