Problems with Windows 2000
I recently had to have my system worked on. It came back to me with Windows
2000, instead of Millennium on it. Ever since I have had problems. It's
been in the shop twice. I recently received it back, only to find that I am
unable to get on the internet, I don't understand. This person that worked
on my computer has Norton, AVG, Pop Up Stopper and a firewall, that
immediately pops up, just to name a few. I need help. twice i've paid him
and am unable to use my computer. Is it the firewall that is preventing me
from entering? When I try to sign on aol, it comes up, "unable to dial up" .
I've gotten two messages so far, one that there is a Norton problem, the
other one, and the one I get most of all is that there is a problem with
Windows. Does anyone know what is going on?

Aruba_tech, for some reason it sounds to me like a driver issue. It is
possible that the since your system came pre-installed with Windows Me, some
of the hardware may not be compatible with windows 2000. Have you verified
that all the hardware is compatible by going to "device manager" ? Make sure
that all hardware is there and that there are no errors with any of them.
Also, as far as the spam blocker and firewall and all the other software you
mention below, depending on how it was configured it may be preventing you
from accessing the internet. Have you tried pinging a web site to see if you
get any responses? Go to Start, Run, then type: CMD and hit "enter". Then at
the prompt type: "ping www.yahoo.com" (without the quotation marks of
course). and see if you get any replies. If you do get replies, then you are
on the internet but one of those software packages is preventing you from
accessing the internet. The third reason would be that you are infected with
a virus. Some viruses will prevent you access to the internet via internet
explorer and/or other web browsers but when you ping a website you will get
replies, which means you do have internet access.
Also, my questions is, does this person really know what they're doing? How
could he give you a computer that doesn't connect to the interent and still
charge you money for that type of service? I have to wonder if he really
knows what he's doing. Have you tried asking him if there is something
"special" you have to do to connect to the internet?

"HELP" is a special word that needs to be used only in specific
circumstances. It does not mean "My computer is broken" even if shouted
(all caps).

Lgonzo99, thank you so much for your quick response and suggestions. I'm
going to work on it this morning and let you know how I made out. I did
contact the guy on numerous occasions, only two for wich I actually got a
chance to talk with him, and I asked him if there was anything different that
I needed to do in order to access the interenet, he claimed it wasn't andthat
everything was fine for him at his office. He picked up my computer here at
my home for repair and brought it back. I feel really stupid for not
checking it out completly before he left. I will let you know what I get with
the information that you have given me. Thanks again :)
