help with touchpad and mouse - hp pavillion laptop

hi, i have an hp pavilion laptop with a touchpad. I've had some troubles
with the touchpad, and i was wondering if anyone could help me out.

the scroll thing at the right of the touchpad doesn't work. The thing where
you just move up and down and the page scrolls up and down. instead, the
cursor just moves up and down.

i was also trying to get a microsoft intellimouse optical USB and ps/2
compatible mouse to work, but to no avail. the computer recognizes the
device, it says it's working, but the mouse doesn't light up and it doesn't
respond at all. it's connected to a USB port.

Your USB port probably lacks the power to run the optical mouse.You can buy
external USB "HUBS" that have external power.
