Whenever I go into a ng, any thread that has a new message automatically
opens the entire thread. Is there any way to prevent this from happening?

disable read last message in options.

Where exactly is this setting? I looked in the options menu and I found
"Remember the last selected message". I disabled it, but threads with
new messages still open automatically.

it "should" work then. not sure why its not. have you tried the
mozilla newsgroups ?

I cross posted to alt.fan.mozilla. I've also just posted this question
to the official Thunderbird message board. I've also checked the Google
Groups archive, but no dice.

View | Threads | Unread.

Alternatively, if you're happy with your current view (presumably
Threads with Unread) and just want to collapse the threads, then go into
the ng and hit '\'.

Still does it.

It also scrolls to the middle of the thread-list sometimes. So I'll
haev to hit "\" then scroll up. Pain in the ass. Back to Xnews I guess.

I believe it's a 'feature' of Moz, I've asked around before with no result.
All I can suggest is that you hit the '\' key when you enter the
newsgroup, which collapses the thread.

Try going to "Threads" in the "View" drop-down menu and change the
settings there. Myself, I leave everything there unchecked.
