HELP with one website...

There is one website that I can not access from my home PC. I can access
from other computers, but they did not have XP. I can access all other
websites, just not this one. I have tried deleting my temporary files,
disabling all firewalls, saving it as a preferred website. My internet
provider even had me run a DOS tracer for the website but it could not be
found. The web host says it's not their problem...since I can access from
other locations. Internet provider says they'll put in a work order, but
they can access the site from their offices and the DOS trace gave no
results. I would think it must be my system...any suggestions? Please,
help...it's a university site and I start class Monday :)

What is the website?
What kind of error do you get when you try to access the website?
What software is giving the error (look at the title in the window).
Where are you when you can/cannot access the website?
What browser are you using to access the website?
What version of Windows are you using?
Have you contacted the IT department at your university?

Can you get to it using this:
<http://4.37.219.110/>
If you can, the problem could be in your HOSTS file:
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Open this file with Notepad ("Files of type" MUST be set to "All Files")
and see if is contains this line:
127.0.0.1 www.twu.edu
If it does, delete this line and save file ("Files of type" MUST be set
to "All Files").
Re-check and make sure the saved file is named just hosts (no extension
like .txt, .doc, etc). Rename if necessary.

If it's not hosts, then I'm stumped.

I can't open provided link...same "page cannot be displayed" message appears.

Sarah,

From a command window:
Ping www.twu.edu
Ping 4.37.219.110

What errors (exact text please) do you get?

Cheers,
Chuck

Dang, that was my best shot. Pings of www.twu.edu time out and my
tracert times out after h0.texaswu.bbnplanet.net

Could TWU be blocking your ISP for some reason? Did IT at TWU check
that? My university blocks all sorts of sites they don't like.

If it works with another browser this would narrow it down to an IE
problem. Would you like to install Firefox and see? Download it from:
www.mozilla.org

Request timed out.
...on both

Tracert 4.37.219.110

Where does it time out?

I pulled up the referenced file, and it does not mention twu but does have
the line
127.0.0.1 localhost

Look at hosts file carefully. See the 127.0.0.1. Hit Ctrl-End, then Page Up
until you get back to 127.0.0.1. Anything?

The only thing other than the examples is
127.0.0.1 localhost

OK. Just eliminating possibilities.

There are known sneaky shit spyware that will add dozens of blank lines
after localhost then their hijacking entries after the blank lines. This
stops a lot of folks from seeing hijacks in the file. Would have been a nice
simple explanation, but...

Hi Lance. I'm getting the same timeout at the bbnplanet.net hop, when I do
a tracert from here. I'm anxious to see what Sarah is getting.

Sorry, I forgot to type anything...heehee.... I just wanted to say that I
have been having similar problems accessing a couple of different websites.
I tried lots of different suggestions from the forums, and none worked. I
subsequently went to mozilla.org, as Lance suggested, and downloaded Firefox
1.0. IT WORKS LIKE A DREAM!! The two sites I was having trouble with no
longer plague me! Thank you vert much.

Stay sane and don't give up!
