I have downloaded and installed the MSICUU.exe program, however, I d
not know how to run it. I was not prompted for a path to install th
program to and I cannot find it to launch.

How do I run this utility? I do not know which of my recentl
installed programs is the one that is causing the install/uninstal
problems I am having.

If anyone can help, please explain in layman's terms. I am not a M
guru but I can find my way around the computer pretty well.

Computer OS is W2K, sp4.

Thanks!!!!! Beck

Becky the shortcut to it should have appeared in the Programs area off the Start button. It will be called Windows Install Cleanup.

Or at C:\Program Files\Windows Installer Clean Up\msicuu.exe for default.

One thing you wat to make sure of is that you downloaded the utility that works with version 2.0 of the Windows Installer technology. That is easy enough. The file you downloaded for the Cleanup utility for Windows Installer Tecnology 2.0 should be this:

msicuu2.exe

darn one other thing. Never use this on a application unless you uninstall through Add\Remove FIRST. Very important.

George, thanks very much for your reply. I downloaded the version tha
supposedly is used for W2K, msicuu.exe. I will do a search fo
msicuu2.exe. Anyway, obviously it did not install because it i
nowhere to be found on the hard drive.

Providing I find and install the correct program, I do not know whic
application to run it against. I really don't know which is th
offending program that did not install correctly. Must the msicu
utility be run to clean a certain program or will it not just look fo
installation errors throughout the entire registry?

Duh,
Beck

Let me further complicate matters. I just found this info on th
Microsoft Support site:

"There are two versions of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
Msicu.exe is designed for use in Microsoft Windows 95, Microsof
Windows 98, and Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me). Msicuu.ex
is designed for use in Microsoft Windows NT and Microsoft Windows 2000
Download the appropriate file for your operating system.

***Important The Msicu.exe and Msicuu.exe utilities are not supporte
on systems where Microsoft Windows Installer 2.0 or later is installed
including Microsoft Windows XP."***

I have verson 2 of the Microsoft Installer on my machine, which use
Windows 2000 Professional. Well, actually, I do have version 1.1 i
some old backup files, but it is version 2 in C:\WINNT\System32.

I'm so confused. I need to clean up some obviously corrupte
installtations and don't have the tools to do it. HELP!!

Thanks so much in advance, Beck

All the installer cleanup utility does is remove some entries in the Registry and clean out remnents of the Install from the installer database. These are usually located in C:\WINNT\Installer.

You really need to uninstall the applications you think there may be trouble with using Add\Remove first. If that is successful then the Installer Cleanup utility is used to remove any leftover Installer data in the Registry and the above folder. It is not used to uninstall an application in which using Add\Remove failed. In fact if that is done you can make the troubles worse.

So at this point I would like you to be specific with one "installation." Tell me what you are doing on what you are doing this to and the errors that occur with any error codes any message you get?

George,
I suspect it is Norton-related. I will start by uninstalling Symante
products and go from there.
Thank you very much!
