Mike

I hope this is the correct place for this post. I did make this similiar
post in the windows xp help forum and received excellent advice that solved
my problem. However I have the same problem on a windows 2000 machine and
the final solution from the xp machine cannot help me in the 2000
environment. So here is my problem.

Someone deleted the Internet Explorer Icon from the desktop so I found under
Microsoft how to recreate it using the registry namespace. Followed the
instructions and the Icon reappeared, however if I click the icon Internet
Explorer does not start. I can right click the icon as I did in the past so
all that is good.

So is there some reason why after recreating the icon that IE will not
start. Is there some other step that is required to have the icon work as it
did in the past.

Now in the xp forum it was determined that if I right click on the Internet
Explorer Icon the default action of "Open Home Page" is not present. So my
question is how do I get Internet Explorer to perform the default action as
it did in the past so that when someone clicks on this newly created Icon it
actually runs Internet Explorer.

Thanks for any information.

Mike

Try this. Right-click the desktop and choose new Folder. Then rename it to this:

ie.{FBF23B42-E3F0-101B-8488-00AA003E56F8}

and click off the desktop. What happens do you get an IE icon? There is a setting in IE Properties which you will be able to access doing this. Or you can do it in the Control Panel:

IE Properties | Advanced | Browsing | Show Internet Explorer on the desktop. If it is checked uncheck
it and choose Apply | OK. Then uncheck it | Apply | OK. But the above suggestion will tell me if
anything is messed up in your registry. Should be though just by deleting the icon off the desktop.

Also make sure you do not have Group Policy set to hide the IE Icon on the desktop:

Start | Run | gpedit.msc | OK | User Configuration | Administrative Templates | Desktop | Hide Internet Explorer Icon on desktop | Not Configured | OK.

Thanks for answering, can't figure this one out on my own.

Try this. Right-click the desktop and choose new Folder. Then rename it to
this:

ie.{FBF23B42-E3F0-101B-8488-00AA003E56F8}

This did bring up an IE ICON.

By doing the IE Properties on the ICON I created nothing happened, that is
the ICON stayed on the desktop. The menu that shows for that ICON if I right
click has the Cut|Create Shortcut|Delete|Rename|Properties

If I look at the properties then it does show me the IE properties.

What areas of the registry should I look in to make the right click menu be
as it is supposed to be.

There is no group policy defined.

Thanks

Mike
