Help with FP 2003 Unlinked files report

T

Tony

Running FP 2003, Windows XP home.
Our website shows over 8000 unlinked files.
The files include .htm, .gif, and .jpg files.
The description for unlinked files says unlinked files are files that
cannot be reached by starting at your home page.

We use the same navigation info at the top of every web page.
And the unlinked .htm pages are reachable from the home page.
They are also reachable from every other page on our website.

Is this a FP error? If not, how do we correct this?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Tony

If the site works correctly in the browser for users, I wouldn't really worry about the report.

What type of navigation are you using, FP navigation or JavaScript DHTML Menus, if JavaScript based,
then FP can not track the links.

Unlinked files also include any files or pages that are linked to by
script, example a JavaScript menu. The Unlinked Files report has
columns that show how many conventional links go to and/or from the
page - these may be links from other "unlinked" pages.

Thomas,
Thanks for taking the time to reply.
That is one of the options we have considered.
Since we have a commercial website, we want to be sure
our pages are linked correctly.
When FP 2003 tells us the almost every file on our web site
is unlinked that is a major concern to us.
We want to be sure this is not a problem to our customers.

Do you know if this is a FrontPage bug?
The report only shows about 10 files that have working links.
Could FP be reporting unlinked as linked and linked as unlinked?

Thomas,
I have read that reply also.
Still would like to know why this is happening.

Are you using JavaScript based menus?

No JavaScript menus.
We have hard coded the complete URL.
I can send you the website URL if you like.

R

Ronx

If by hard-coded you mean absolute links like
http://example.com/page.htm, then FrontPage will treat each link as an
external link - hence there are no internal links to pages in your
website. Change the links to relative links and the problem will go
away. FrontPage can manage relative links in menus, provided they are
not added to each page using SSI.

T

Thomas A. Rowe

Ok, send the URL, if you like.

Also, FP doesn't manage absolute URLs, only relative URLs, so that could be your problem.

I have tried changing to relative links on an unlinked page.
No change in the number of unlinked files.
I also changed a page to absolute links.
Again, no change in the number of unlinked files.

By the way, the website urls is www.thesaabsite.com.

Thanks,
Tony

You have to start with relative links on your home page, since this is
where FP starts its search for linked pages.
Since this is a commercial site, I suggest you drop the VML graphics -
VML will only display correctly in Internet explorer 5.5 and later
running on Windows, other browsers will see nothing or poor quality
..gif representations of the graphic.
VML graphics include WordArt, Text Boxes, ShapeArt and any objects
created with the FrontPage Drawing toolbar.
You can convert WordArt to a conventional .jpg image by pasting into a
graphic editor (such as Paint) and crop, optimise then save as .jpg.
