FP2000 unlinked report is useless - does it work in 2002/2003?

I made a website that checked out fine. Then my partner added
shared borders in FP2000. Now the unlinked files report
alleges that almost every file is an orphan. However
they can be reached by clicking on something. None are
really unlinked.

all links are relative
no javascript links
has a home page called index.html
have not copied any files into folders without FrontPage
have recalculated hyperlinks

Yet PhruntPage still reports that jet black is snow white.
After 3 days of searching through many forums, I find
this is due to the links being in shared borders.
How sloppy of Microsoft to release such a bug.

My rage would be soothed if newer FP (2002? 2003?)
give correct unlinked files reports?
So any users of later versions: do you get true reports
if you have shared borders?

Does index.html have a house icon in the file list? If not, this
explains the unlinked status for your pages.

The unlinked files report will show every file that cannot be reached
from the home page - the home page being the page with the house icon.

The report also has columns named To and From, which show the number of
files the "unlinked" file actually links to, and the number of pages
linking to it.

Links in shared borders will not create any issues with this. When a
page is saved the shared border is automatically added to the page and
saved with it, so any links in the shared border are in the page. There
never has been a bug reported about this in the last 10 years from any
version of FrontPage (some problems, yes, but these were resolved by
correcting errors such as that in the first line of this post.)

I am curious: how then can you set a page to be the "home page"
if FrontPage thinks it is not?

Right click the page and choose "Set as home page"
FrontPage has a limited number of filenames and extensions that can be
used for the home page, so this will not work on *any* page.

Note that changing the home page may destroy any Navigation view (and
associated link bars) you have set up.

I regret to inform you that index.html has a house icon.
So there must be another reason, e.g. FP2000 is ever so
slightly deficient in producing perfect reports.

If using FrontPage components, check that the navigation view has the
home page in it, and that all pages are under the home page. For
example, http://192.168.1.204/fp/Default.asp?fl=998566610 shows a
navigation view where half the pages are NOT under the home page - these
will all be shown in the unlinked files report as unlinked.

If not using FrontPage components for navigation, does the system use
Javascript for the links - again all these pages will be shown as
unlinked.

Try running Tools->Recalculate Hyperlinks This may resolve the problem.
Another solution may be found by deleting web cache files which may be
corrupted.
Download FP Cleaner from http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/fpclean.htm and
run the routines that delete the hidden temporary files, and delete the
hidden web cache files. These will be reproduced as and when FrontPage
requires them.

In navigation view, it has the house icon, but not in folders list
(I have never seen the house icon there for any web).
In reports, I don't have to and from columns.

Also, right click on a file doesn't include an option to set as
home page. Are you talking about a newer FrontPage than 2000?
Another thing I forgot to mention before about reports is that the
total of file sizes that FP2000 reports is double what is really
there.

I have just checked with FP2000, and you are right - there is no House
in the File List or Folders View, and there are no To or From columns in
unlinked files view.

In navigation view, right click on the Home Page and choose Properties.
This will tell you the file name of the Home Page.

The Hyperlinks view used to show a map of to and from
links, before the shared borders were added.

What does it show now? Is this the same for all pages?
Using shared borders should not make any difference to the reports or
Hyperlinks View - it never has for me (and I still have subwebs that use
shared borders.)
