Help with dialer problem, please and thank you

Hello. When I boot up, the dialer starts up asking to
connect to my default dialup connection. I haven't
determined an exact pattern but, a few times through the
day (approx. 0-3 times) the dialer will pop up asking to
connect. If I leave the computer on through the night
(approx. 14 hrs.) I find 5 Dial-up connection windows on
top each other, each one offering to connect. I've checked
all of the settings I can find re: dial-up connections,
modem configuration, Windows and McAfee Anti-Virus update
settings. I should mention this seemed to begin after a
major update from both Windows and McAfee about 3 weeks
ago.
Can you please help me stop the dialer from starting up
without my permission? Thank you.

Sounds like you have aprogram trying to access the
internet to update itself.

Look at the McAfee preferences and see if it shows update
automatically enabled.

Thank you. This started to occur 3 weeks ago. My McAfee
has been set to auto-update for a year and a half. If
there is no connection currently active, it would wait
until there was an active connection. I'll try setting the
update to manual and see if that makes a difference. Can
you think of any other possibilities? Thanks again.

Hello Thanks again.
After disabling McAfee's auto update the dialer stil pops
up. So thats not it. Please, any more posibilities you can
think of?

check IE and other internet programmes and make sure none
are set to connect automatically (email and news and IE
would be my first look)

I would also suggest having something like ad aware and
spybot have a look at your system if you cannot find the
problem

good luck

I have exactly the same problem. I recently did a fresh install of W2K, and
installed all of the critical updates on the Windows Update site. I have
disabled auto update on everything I can think of, and it still pops up.
I've gone to connection settings in IE, and set it to "Never Dial A
Connection". It pops up the next time I boot. When I go back to check the
connection settings in IE, I find that they have reset themselves to "Dial
Whenever A Network Connection Is Not Present". Isn't there any way to stop
any program from changing your settings?
