Help with C drive read only problem

Hank

I am running WindowsXP SP3 with all the updates. Also have Zone Alarm
Extreme Security Internet Suite and PC Spydoctor (antivirus part shut
off) on my computer. I keep both current.
Recently I noticed some delays in selecting folders etc. I had just
run a complete PC backup using Acronis True Image version 11.0 when I
started getting blue screen crashes.

Just before the crashes I was erasing a number of picture files that I
had already transferred to CD. Took out some 600 MB of files

Tried to do a defrag using a third party defrag software that has
always worked great in the past. It got hung up near the end of the
process and got the first blue screen.

When I tried to do a total re-install using Acronis True Image booting
from their disk it stopped notthing changed the Program folder seemed
to be Read Only now. A lot of other folder when proerties was check
said they were read only. I tried changing attributes to removed but I
think I was only partially successful.

I then tried to use a restore point but none seemed to work.

Finally when back to my secondary (older) Acronis True Image backup
from July 19th. That worked but a number of files like mailboxes and
Quicken bank files were in July. I could use some of the latest
Acronis True Image backup by retoring some files to a new location and
then copy into July files on PC.

I think I must have picked up something that changed my Program Files
folder to "read only". Probably to prevent getting protection data
files updates. Just a guess.

QUESTIONS:
Can a whole C drive or the primary folder be set to read only?

If so how does one go about undoing this?

Could I have another problem? System seems to be running and data
files updating?

TIA

Hi
First of all run chkdsk /f
http://www.ehow.com/how_2052292_run-chkdsk-f-windows-xp.html

Next download install and run Malawarebytes
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.ph...a028d7cc835e&gclid=CMmzi8vUq5wCFUxs4wodzjbLcg

As to the Program folder being read only, this is normal

It's hard to grep some of your meanings, but here's an important point
if you weren't aware:
XP folders are ALWAYS marked readonly but the readonly refers to
something other than the folder beign ro to Explorer. You can tell it
to mark a folder as readonly and the benefit you'll get is it'll ask you
if you want all files and subfoder files under it set to readonly. Then
it'll do it.
But: Readonly on a folder means nothing to you w/r to explorer and
creating, deleteing, copying files & folders, etc. goes.
