Help! Windows XP desktop acts like a folder

While using XP, my desktop suddenly added a sidebar onto my desktop, like when you open up any folder (not explore) that has 'Folder Tasks' 'Other Places' and 'Details'--right on the left side of my desktop. None of the objects on my desktop can be altered. This has happened once before and I had to use system restore, but I have no restore points I can use. How can I fix this? It makes my desktop completely disfunctional.
