HELP! unable to get past Stop error for ntfs.sys - 00000024

K

Ken

I get this stop error on bootup which then continues to
reboot the machine. I've tried running the XP repair from
the original CD but it stops with the same error. I have
two drives and 20GB and an 80GB drive which I've tested
using the manufacturers analysis software. The both come
up clean for the quick test and the extended tests. I
have two EIDE connectors on a SOYO Dragon Lite
motherboard. I've tried switching them but it did not
make a difference. I've even tried reinstalling XP but it
halts with the same error. I'm running out of ideas. Can
anyone out there suggest some other options or have any
insight into what might be causing the error?

Troubleshooting Stop 0x24 or NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM

The answer on Microsoft site is here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/228888

However, they forgot one critical step. After renaming ntfs.sys, you have to return to windows in dos mode and not restart when it ask you to (because it has replaced the now missing ntfs.sys which will be available after restart). Stay in the dos windows and you can run "chkdsk e: /f".
