I am trying to network 1 pc w/ winxp pro and 4 w/winxp home. i have to use
simple file sharing so that the home edition pc's can communicate, don't I?
I just want one of the home pc's to be able to access files on the Pro pc.
if i can password protect a specific folder and then share it, i think it
will all work out. any ideas?

No. You can enable or disable simple file sharing on the XP Pro
computer. The XP Home computers can only use simple file sharing and
don't have the option of disabling it.

Enabling or disabling simple file sharing on XP Pro determines how it
validates requests from other computers to access its shared disks and
folders.

With simple file sharing enabled, XP Pro grants networked access to
all users on all computers.

With simple file sharing disabled, XP Pro grants networked aces to
users who have matching user accounts (same user name and password) on
XP Pro and on the computer that requests access. This web site has
details:

You can't control access based on which computer is requesting it.
Windows XP doesn't have passwords for shared folders.

In XP Pro, you can control access based on user name and password, as
described in the web page above.

File sharing has no effect on Internet access. All computers should
be able to access the Internet through the broadband router.

Please note that:

1. There's no way to control access based on computer names.

2. Windows XP controls access to shared disks and folders, but not to
individual files. If you share a disk or folder, all the files in it
are accessible.

If you disable simple file sharing on a computer that runs XP Pro, you
can specify access permissions based on user accounts. If a user has
permission, he/she can use any computer on the network to access
shared disks and folders.

If you haven't already done so, please read this article to get the
details:
