Win XP Pro and Home editions network access problems

Guest

I have 2 PCs - one running Win XP Pro and one Win XP Home.
I set up a network between those 2 PCs. The internet sharing is working
great.
My problem is I can only access folders on the PC with the Home edition
using the PC with the Pro edition, while can't access the shared folders on
the Pro PC from the Home PC.

David,

Please start by providing ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

What SP is on each computer?

Also, let's look at the browser situation. The Microsoft Browstat program will
show us what browsers you have in your domain / workgroup, at any time.

You can download Browstat from either:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded
file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command
window.

For more information about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see:

Start - Run - "cmd". Type "browstat status >c:\browstat.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\browstat.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

Is there a firewall (either XP's built-in one, or a program like
Norton Internet Security or ZoneAlarm) running on the Pro PC? If so,
configure it to allow access by the other computer.

Hello there,

Hmmm.... I have SP2 on both computers.

After searched the Internet forums for this problem I found out that alot of
people
have the exact same problem. Now I think it has something to do with the
fact that one PC
has Win XP Pro and one is Win XP Home. I think that the Win XP pro has some
sort of a
file protecting profile that denies the access from other PCs on the network
if they don't use
XP Home edition. Once again, the Pro machine can access the Home machine but
not vice versa.

Thanks. Maybe you can help.

David,

OK, if all you want to do is provide unrestricted access between the two
computers, enable Simple File Sharing (Control Panel - Folder Options - View -
Advanced settings) on the XP Pro computer.

Then enable the Guest account, on both computers. Start - Run - "cmd" - type
"net user guest /active:yes" in the command window.

Cheers,
Chuck

Thanks for your help.

am i supposed to right the entire command as it is ... ?

David

David,

Do you mean enabling Guest?
- Hit the Start button.
- Select Run.
- Enter "cmd" (without the quote marks) in the Open: box
- Enter "net user guest /active:yes" (without the quote marks) in the command
window.

Cheers,
Chuck
