HELP: Security Patch KB#824146 breaks Win2K+SP4 in some cases at lease

Laura T.

Hi,

This is what I did:

1. Installed SP4 without RPC fix on 5 PCs
2. Reboot and everything OK, nothing in event log.
3. Installed RPC patch 824146 (10 september)
4. Rebooted and now I have lots of event log errors.

These two are just some examples, there are 10 services that do not start.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7022
Date: 23/09/2003
Time: 12.07.59
User: N/A
Computer: DT092203A
Description:
The Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service hung on starting.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7001
Date: 23/09/2003
Time: 12.07.59
User: N/A
Computer: DT092203A
Description:
The Print Spooler service depends on the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service
which failed to start because of the following error:
After starting, the service hung in a start-pending state.

Now the users cannot for example print because the print spooler does not
start, nor many other services that are quite vital.
The login screen halts on 'Preparing Network Connections...' for 1-2 minutes
before it continues.
This seems to happen only on SP4 machines. SP3 ones do not have any problems
(so far?)

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Laura
