Microsoft solved the problem right away - first suggestion did it. All I
needed was that one tip.

It may help others to know that MS will provide phone/email/Internet support
at no cost for any security or security update problems.

It might have helped others, if you had posted THAT 1 tip!
Dear Mad,

I did not know I could post it! The NG told me to check to see if the OSE
was running, but not how to find it; it was not in SEARCH, nor on Help &
Support. Here is 1 of 3 - this worked!
note: I've never had that problem before

Step 1: Determine the status of the Office Source Engine service

=================================================

To determine the status of the Office Source Engine service, follow these
steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc , and then click OK.

2. In the list of services, double-click Office Source Engine.

3. View the Startup type list.

4. If the startup type is set to Disabled, change the startup type to
Manual. To do this, click Manual in the Startup type list, and then click
OK.

5. Try to install the Office update again.

Now THAT is pretty good! I wonder at what point in the novel she said
that.
