help real audio/video has Win Pic & Fax Viewer as recommended prog

my pc is running on winxp sp2 home ed.

i accidentally chose windows picture and fax viewer when opening a real
audio/real video file (as i was supposed to click on windows media player).
now whenever i right click and choose Open With... on my real audio/real
video files the windows pic and fax viewer shows up under recommended
programs along with real player. before that windows picture and fax viewer
belonged to Other Programs

is there any way to undo this as real audio/real video files won't open in
win pic and fax viewer anyway? it gets pretty annoying when i click on that
instead on real player. i'd appreciate any help on this.

1. Right-click on one of your Real Audio / Video file while holding shift key
(if Open With doesn't appear automatically)
2. Point to Open With.... - in the list, click the option Choose Program
3. In the list, check if Real Audio is listed. If it is not then browse for
Real Audio programs usually in your \Program Files\Real\RealPlayer.
4. Make a check mark on "Always use the program to open this kind of file"
and click Ok.

Next time, when you double-click on a Real Audio / Video file it will
automatically open in Real Audio.

Hope this information helps you, let us know!

i have no problems whatsoever with opening .rm files with Real Player. it is
just that i accidentally included windows picture and fax viewer under
Recommended Programs when only Real Player should be there. i merely wanted
windows picture and fax viewer to resume being grouped under Other Programs
so that when i right click and select Open With.. only Real Player will be
there and nothing else. hope this makes things clearer.

Ok! I Found the solution. Read the article below where clearly mention that
"How to Remove Programs from the "Open With" List".

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/258860

1. Click Start - Run - type REGEDIT and press Enter key.
2. Expand To:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\FileExts\.extension\OpenWithList
3. Here .extension means, the file type whoms Open With list you want to
modify. For example, I want to modify or remove an entry called "MusicMatch
JukeBox" from MP3 file type then I will goto:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\FileExts\.mp3\OpenWithList

4. Mean while, If that doesn't work then also delete an entry of the same
from OpenWithProgids.

Definately this information will help you to come out with a solution. Let
us know!

Thank you for your reply, but I'm not sure on whether I should do what you
suggest because of:

1. the "how to" applies only to win 2000 and its variants, incl. ME
2. i can't seem to find the value that represents windows picture and fax
viewer on the left box right after you click on .rm then on "open with list".
but by any chance, is it shimgvw.dll?

haven't changed anything yet. I just want to be sure first

Sorry, I mixed things up again. I should have said right box rather than left
box.

I did further searching and found out that the value "shimgvw.dll" does
pertain to windows picture and fax viewer. But would editing the registry be
safe when it does say that the procedure only applies to win 2000 and ME?

Again, my computer runs on XP SP2

I apologize for my paranoia. This would be my first time to edit the
registry ever.

Before giving you the instructions to modify the registry in Windows XP SP2
to remove the entry in Open With list, first I experiment it on my PC and it
works fine.
But please donot delete any entry about which you don't have sufficient
information.

Here I explain how to do it:

1. Click Start - Run
2. type REGEDIT and press Enter key.
3. Expand to (instead of further Searching anything else regarding WFV):

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\FileExts\.extension\OpenWithList

4. Here .extension is the file type you want to modify. For instance, .RA
5. Then the accurate key will

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\FileExts\.RA\OpenWithList

6. In the right side pane, there will be a list of programs who support that
file type.
E.g.:

a. Winamp.exe
b. wmplayer.exe

7. Select the entry you don't required and delete it.
8. If that doesn't change anything then you can also delete the entry from

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\FileExts\.RA\OpenWithProgids

If you are not still sure then please do not modify the Registry as it can
harm your Windows and live with that Open With list until you find a desire
and accurate solution.

Hope this information helps you, let us know!

To RajKohli,

It worked! THANK YOU VERY, VERY MUCH!

I hope my reluctance to follow wasn't a bother for you. To be honest, I also
posted my problem on other groups (on Photo as well as on Video). But you
were the only one who came up with a concrete solution!

More power to you!
