Help Re-instating Firewall

My kids got our PC in to some serious virus problems, which are almost
resolved. In the processof this my firewall has been turned off. When I go
to Programs..System tools... Security center - I can not click to turn-on
firewall. In addition, my virus protection icon is missing from security
center. In the process of doing this I mistakingly clicked "restore
defaults" under the advanced TAB of firewall. Please help me re-instate
firewall to an active/protective state. Thanks - Tom

What do you mean it's "almost resolved"? If you are sure it is
completely removed, a repair install might be sufficient. Insert the
Windows XP cd and choose "repair". If there are any traces of this on
your system, your system is still compromised and you will have to
reformat your hard drive and reinstall Windows. In either case, be sure
to back up your data.

John - Please advise which CD. I tried them all. Each returned a message
that files on PC are more recent than those on the CD. I did load service
pack 2 all over again but no luck. Should the CD allow me to repair sextions
of XP without reloading everything. Again, I just need to get firewall
active and stop viruses and malware from getting close. tom

You need the original Windows XP cd. If you purchased your computer
with xp preinstalled, you may have been provided with a factory restore
cd instead. The options will usually be different in this case. This
will usually return your computer to the state it was when you first
purchased it. If asked, format the hard drive first.

Some manufaturers provide the factory restore on a hidden partition. I
can't be any help to you there. Contact the manufacturer for support on
this.

Jon - I have the CD titled "re-installation CD and SP1". I get 4 options:
Install Windows XP
Install optional windows components
Perform additional tasks
check system compatibility

I do not see any functions that appear to repair / restore components.
Install does not proceed because an error message "Windows version on
computer is more recent than CD version". What do you suggest please?

1. Firewalls do not prevent you from installing virues.

2. Next time make sure you have a good anti-virus running 24/7.
