help please

Please can you help me, my drive can play dvd or cd, the problem is when i
put in a blank dvd it is reading it as a cd. I have been told that it could
be the lens but it plays original dvd's and blanks that have something on
them. please can you help me as i am totaly stuck.

Is it a DVD Writer?
How can blank disk's have something on them?
