Blank dvd's reading as cd's

Both my laptop & external dvd drives are reading blank dvd's as cd's. Also,
regular store-bought dvd's play perfectly on both but dvd's I've burned play
choppy in the laptop drive (perfect in the external). Any help is
appreciated. Thanks.

Oh, and when I try to write to a dvd or cd it says the drive is not
accessible and "incorrect function".

Hi Lucy,

See if this applies.

"Incorrect function" error message when you access the CD-ROM drive, the
DVD-ROM drive, or the CD-RW drive:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315350/

CD-ROM access is missing and messages cite error code 31, code 32, code 19,
code 39, or code 41 after you remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/

You receive an "Incorrect function" error message when you try to save a
file from an Office program to a CD-RW or a DVD/CD-RW drive:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/905431

You cannot write to a DVD-RAM disc that is in a DVD-RAM/CD-RW combination
drive:

Also:

Open My Computer
Right-click the CD/DVD-RW drive-letter, and choose Properties
Select the Recording tab
Place a checkmark near Enable CD recording on this drive and click OK.

My problem is similar, but I get no error messages, I can play a DVD in my
LITEON 160PS DVDRW, but when I put a blank DVD-R or DVD+R on the drive, the
windows explorer list changes to CD Drive. I cannot burn anything with any
software. I have installed the most recent firmware, I have XP Pro SP2.
The Windows driver being used, strangely, is from 2001, and it looks like it
is cdrom.sys. I cannot find anything more current.
