help please!

I need to take Win 2000 off my puter. It is unbelievable
slow. It came with Win 98se, but foolishly, I allowed a
friend to talk me into an upgrade. It's driving me nuts.
Setup alone takes 20 mins to just get going for my
various programs.

Please tell me how I can get rid of this thing and
replace it with an OS that does NOT bog down my computer.
I would also really like to avoid deleting my files as I
have nothing on which to back them up.

What processor does your system have and how much RAM is
installed? If you don't know, press on your keyboard,
windows< and >Pause/Break< at the same time. The window
