help please :VPN over internet and modem router????

Dear all,

I would like to be able to connect my friend PC to mine over internet.
My friend pC is running W2k pro and mine is running XP pro.
My friend have a standard ADSL modem and I have a Wireless ADSL MODEM/Router
us-robotics type USR 019106.

I am able to test a VPN connection between two of my PC within my home
network but now I would like to be able to do the same through internet.

How can I do that ?
DO I have to enable somethin on my router to receive VPN packet
Does my provider have to do something to let me go to that configuration.
