Help ! New HD won't do what it's told.

System :

AMD XP2000, Abit KG7-RAID,768MB,Maxtor 120GB IDE HD

New 160GB drive was installed using the Maxtor boot floppy, and (allegedly)
copied my old C: drive (the 120Gb drive mentioned above) to my shiny new
drive. I then applied the Maxtor patch for enabling drives over 137GB in
Windows.

If I set my 160GB drive as boot drive, the boot sequence gets to "Verifying
DMI Pool data..." and just stops there. If I boot to my old 120Gb drive it
works fine, but reports my 160GB drive in windows as 'unformatted'. I
haven't formatted it because I'm still hoping there's some kind of simple
trick that will enable windows to read the data I've copied over (if indeed
it happened at all) thus saving me another 22-hr copy session.

Any ideas ? Perhaps the patch doesn't work - is there a registry hack ?

Cheers,

Blewyn

Your problem is that you used the Maxtor setup program. You will now have to
go to the Maxtor web site and find out how to remove their nonsense. Windows
XP does not need it, and doesn't even like it.

When you have the hard drive cleaned, just boot from the XP CD and follow
the instructions. Suggest you create a 10 gig partition just for the
operating system. Then you can obtain the proper updates that will allow the
whole hard drive to be used. After that is installed, use disk manager to
create addition partitions and format same.
