migrating XP to a new HD.

Vincent

Good afternoon (for those on the left coast)...

After constantly running out of disk space on my
6GB HD, I decided to get myself a 120GB HD and
I'd like to make this new 120GB HD the disk where
XP is installed and is ran from from a much larger
partition.

Is there an easy way to do this? I tried copying
everything from the 6GB HD to the 120GB HD and
simply making the later the boot disk. This of
course didn't work.

Is installing a fresh copy of OS to the new disk
the only way to get XP on a brand new hard drive?
Are there migration tools to move all my data to
the new drive?

Thanks in advance,
Vincent

You'll need to install a clean copy on the 120Gb then
migrate your date from the 6Gb
(otherwise there's all kinds of problems with Registry..)

I just did the same thing, except my previous HD was a 40 giger. Mine came
with a factory disk to accomplish the task. Other than having to install
the new drive as the slave at first, then reinstalling it as the master it
was pretty much effortless. It did take 5 hours to transfer the data also.

If your drive did not come with the software to do this for you--check the
web site.

Good Luck

David, you can "clone" the smaller drive to the larger one:

"You may not need anything as elaborate as Norton Ghost. Some drive
manufacturers publish free cloning utilities to allow easy migration to a
new drive.

For example, Maxtor has MaxBlast. Download it and make the diskette,
install the new drive as primary and convert the original to secondary (or
use cable select as appropriate), and reboot with the diskette. Follow the
instructions and go for lunch - it can take a while. The only hitch is
that one of the disks must be a Maxtor product.

Doing this in this manner is very easy and straightforward. Within Ghost or
Drive Image, it's probably the most basic task. If you simply launch the
app, you'll find the functions from the menu easily - clone a disk or
partition to another disk or partition. Just pick the right ones as source
and destination."

What I use is BootIT NG, from http://www.BootitNG.com ($35 shareware -
30 day full functional trial)

Download, to its own folder, extract from the zip, run the bootitng to
make a boot floppy.

With the new drive plugged in as slave/secondary, boot the floppy,
Cancel Install, entering maintenance, then click on Partition work.
Highlight your C:,Copy, then on left select the new drive (HD1) and
Paste.

You might then consider a resize up a bit. Reserve space beyond the
partition for a second one (I would not make C bigger than 16 GB myself
- that is better done from Disk Management with XP though

Now click on 'View MBR' and in it highlight the entry for this new C
partition and click the 'Set Active' Click 'Write Standard MBR' and
Apply.

Close out, swap the disks to make the new one the one that boots, and
reboot into XP.
