Help needed: XP Help and Support

R

Ray Birch

Hi

I'd be greatful for any advice as to how I can fix my XP Help and Support.
I've tried all manner of things to rectify the problem,
Re-installed XP SP2, reinstalled the PCHealth folder by running pchealth.inf
and I've tried loads of regfises that I've found on the internet associated
with trying to fix it. I've checked that the registry entry for the
helpctr.exe file is pointing to the right place and just about every other
thing I could find on the subject. Clicking on the link in the start menu
won't open it and it also won't open if the helpctr file is clicked on
directly. The Help and Support service is started so that's OK too.

So as you can see..... any further suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks

What is the Error Report in Event Viewer when you try to access
Help and Support?

ou can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Hi Gerry,

Thankyou for your quick reply. There is nothing in any of the event viewer
logs associated with Help and Support when I try to start the application
from the Start Menu. However, Helpctr.exe appears very briefly in the
taskmgr. Helpsvc.exe also appears but stays loaded in the taskmgr for
longer.

Hope this helps

Is the Help and Support Service set as StartUp type automatic?
On the Recovery tab are actions on the First and Second Failure
set to Restart the Service.

Try Start, Run, type "sfc /scannow" without quotes and hit Enter.
