Help needed with wireless access

I have a Sony Vaio laptop with Windows XP Pro SP2. We got a D-Link
DIR-655 wireless router and gigabit switch to use for wireless
connections.

When I configure the wireless settings using WPA-PSK /TKIP I can see
the SSID broadcast but I cannot connect. When I try, I see a balloon
popup in the tray that says it's validating the connection. Then I get
an error that no certificate could be found. I have NO IDEA why it's
looking for a certificate.

On another laptop (a HP) ALSO with Windows XP pro sp2, I configure the
wireless the same way (using Windows to manage the wireless
connection, just like with the Sony) and the HP connects fine.

What can I check on the Sony laptop that would help to resolve this
problem?

I would call D-Link customer support and let them figure it out. its
fast and doesn't cost you anything.

Any advice given is my attempt to show appreciation for all
the excellent help I've received here but I'm no MVP so it
may only apply NUGS (Normally, Usually, Generally, Sometimes :)

You need a password (they call a passphrase or something) on both the
router and then on the computer. At least that is what I think you need
to do from here. Use ASCII if it gives you a choice. As HEX you can only
use 0-9 and A-F.

I called them before I posted. D-Link does not troubleshoot windows.
THis is a Windows issue, not a D-Link issue. I can connect from
another Windows PC, but not this Sony.

You're referring to a WEP key. WEP is old and not secure anymore
(although it's better than nothing, not by much). The D-Link and
Windows XP sp2 support WPA and WPA2 now and use regular phrases (no
spaces support, unfortunately) so long complex passphrases are easy to
configure.

I have the router configured properly for authentication. I have
another Windows XP laptop working off of it just fine. The problem I'm
having is just with the SONY laptop that keeps looking for a
certificate when it tries to connect. This is where I need assistance.

Sounds like you are using WPA EAP-TLS and it is failing because it has
no valid certificate. If not, then your passphrase is suppose to be the
certificate.

I too have gotten that run around from D-Link. Except I had two
computers that didn't like the D-Link and they said it was Windows fault
too. Funny I then replaced the D-Links with US Robotics and they worked
fine. Go figure.
