Help, need 64-bit disk or advice . . .

Stan Shankman

Greetings all,
I attended a Microsoft event, and received a free copy of Windows Vista
Ultimate Not For Resale.
I had to visit a Microsoft site to obtain my key.
The key is good for both 32-bit and 64-bit installs.
I have the key, and I have the 32-bit install DVD.
But I did not install the Vista 32-bit version on my machine.
I installed a 64-bit version of Vista Ultimate using my provided key.
All worked well for many months.
But then my system started acting up.
Games would not remember where they lift off, and Texas Hold'em quite
working entirely.
And when SP2 came along and refused to load.
I read all I could on the web, and came to the conclusion that I have a
damaged system file.
I need to do a repair install.
Problem is, I have no 64-bit disk.
And, I can't even remember how I did it, or what I used to load that
original 64-bit version install.
I looked all through my disks, and just can't find a 64-bit version nor can
I find a place to download it from.
Does anyone else have this problem? And can you tell me what I should do?
Thanks all,
Stan Shankman

The DVD should have both 32 and 64 versions of the piggy Vista. Why you
would want to reinstall that POS is beyond comprehension.

I did the same recently and got a free Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit version
(NFR). I immediately returned the 32-bit version setup disk and requested
for a 64-bit setup disk at the event. Microsoft mailed it to my home within
3 weeks.
I installed a 64-bit version of Vista Ultimate using my provided key.

How exactly did you install 64-bit version using a 32-bit setup disk?
And, I can't even remember how I did it, or what I used to load that

Gotta think harder.

AFAIK it's never available for download.

Call Microsoft.

Stan,

I have one of the MS Not for Resale kits also but I have 2 separate discs
each with it's own product key. Are you sure you have 64 bit installed?
Right click computer in the start menu and then properties. Since you can't
find a 64 bit disc and have no recollection of how you did the install, just
maybe you have 32 bit installed.

If you do have 64 bit installed then your only option may be eBay but I'm
not sure I would trust getting OS software from eBay. Any place else you
might find a disc/key is likely to be very expensive since Ultimate was very
expensive to begin with and wasn't widely distributed. I sure if you can
use a different version of Vista for a repair install of Ultimate since
Ultimate included some features not included in the common Home Premium
edition.

With the help of your install disk (the one you have), you can fix whatever
is wrong presently. Just wage your options and pick the one pertaining to
your failure. Then let the machine do the rest.
In all probability you closed a program prematurely or shut down to soon.
You'll be surprised by what Vista can and not what it can't do.
Keep us informed, please.

Harry.

What he is saying is that he has a product key that will activate
either the 32 or 64bit Ultimate. He was given a 32bit only cd for
ultimate, opted to not install it but rather to install the 64bit
version. For what ever reason he says that he no longer has access to
the 64bit version that he installed from. I would guess that he probably
downloaded and installed trial version from MS, no longer available for
download. If that was the case, try to find someone with the appropriate
CD version and install from there as your product key is what activates
it. MS has gotten strict on pirated copies that is why it activates
online or you have to call it in.

I am fully aware of that, but he was also saying that everything was working
fine until a while ago ago, when his system was acting up and I was
referring to the fact. Fixing this problem may be primary.
