I cant figureit out for the life of me. I was sending faxes just fine
yesterday. Today...nothing.

I click on the icon to ope Windows Fax Console. Usually, after a few
seconds, all the faxes sent, received, etc. are shown

Now at the very bottom of the Fax COnsole screen is says "Refreshing" and
nothing is listed.

Then after five minutes or so I get "all fax printers are inaccessible"

My printer is working fine. My phone line is ok beacuse I am able to connect
to the internet.

What does all fax printers are inaccessible mean. I am in real trouble here.

I've seen two causes for this, security database corruption and Anti
Virus/Spam scanners. The last incident I saw was very much like yours, it
was working one day and just quit. I suggested he try the hotfix for
database corruption referenced in this article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884018/EN-US/
You cannot add a Windows component in Windows XP

He posted back this response:

"...Darndest thing, Hal. Today my fax software is working! I emailed MS for
the hotfix, they replied saying it was free but they needed more details. I
went to the software to double-check the error messages, and everything was
working fine. Only thing different is I'd uninstalled Ad-Aware and AVG
Anti-Spyware yesterday because I was getting low virtual memory alerts (and
I have Spybot on my system anyhow). Can you see a possible connection there?
(The fax problem had been consistent for at least a month up to today.)"

With that in mind, if you're running a virus scanner, see if disabling it
makes any difference.

I am having the same problem also. I think it started in the last month or
maybe two and I have been looking all over the internet trying to find an
answer. I am running xp and have been for years and for all this time I have
also been running AVG and Ad-Aware. It used to be that when I was in Word and
wanted to fax a document all I had to do was select "fax" as my printing
option and the fax wizard would open up. But then about a month ago or so for
no apparent reason that I am aware of it would get stuck on the opening
screen of the fax wizard. I found that if I restarted my computer and opened
up the fax console first thing I could then go to my word document and select
the fax and it would open up. I have not been able to open the fax wizard
since that time without already having the fax console open. However, the
trick has now become to get the fax console open, most attempts it just gets
stuck in the refreshing mode. I have to turn on my computer and make sure
that I don't open any programs until the computer has completely loaded
everything that it wants to load, then I seem to have a little window of
opportunity in which to get my fax console open. If I try too soon or wait
too long it just get stuck in refresh. Sometimes I have to restart my
computer five or six times to get the fax console up and running.

Earlier this week I changed the auto update on my AVG to happen later in the
day rather than when the computer first starts. I thought by not using the
modem before I opened the console I had a better chance of getting it open,
but some days that seems to make a difference and others it doesn't. After
reading your posting I have tried a few restarts where as soon as AVG signs
on I shut it down waited for the computer to finish it's processing and then
opened the console. It seems to help some of the times, but not 100%. Why
could I have run these anti-virus programs all these years and now all of a
sudden started having problems with my fax? We fax several times a week so
it is a program I have been using all along. I do not want to remove my
anti-virus programs and I am not willing to just have Spy-Bot (which I
currently don't have).

I am afraid that eventually I won't be able to get my fax console open at all.

I don't know anything about security database cortuption and the article
said not to use the fix unless that is definately the problem. I haven't
tried to add any Windows
programs to xp. I haven't tried to reinstall my fax although I have wondered
about trying. Anyway, from what I can figure that is not the problem.

I guess I will keep experimenting with shutting down my AVG, but I wanted to
let you know that I am having this problem as it seems to me that it is a new
problem that is starting to crop up.

I also am having the same problem...It started after I downloaded
AVG, It seems after every update when you need to restart, the fax
looses its ability to open, you must reload the ms fax drivers.
However the worst part, it cannot find them! I looked into the i386
files where the fax utilities are stored, and they are not there. I
have since copied them to a new location, so now when this happens I
have to direct the search to the new location. After they are loaded,
they reappear in the i386 folder, but will disappear with the next AVG
update. This is very frustrating as I received and send many times
during the work day. Idid remove the anti-spyware add-on, but still
have a problem having to reload the drivers after they are removed
from the Microsoft i386 folder. How can I safeguard this removal.
