Every time I type in a website in my address bar in Internet Explorer I get
the folowing message pop up:
Cannot find www.(whatever the address is). Make sure the path or internet
address is correct.
Any ideas what it might be. I can't get into any websites at the moment.

Hi Joanne, do what snowball suggested, and also did this just started to
happen out of the blue?... if so, see "snowball" ... else you need to
check your modem settings, if cable modem then unplug the power
physically from the modem wait 20 secs and plug back in, might have to
reboot. I have a cable isp and its not unusual for them to go down now
and then.
Run all your anti virus/spy ware scans... se if that comes up pwith
something.

Assuming you history, cache, and temp files are cleaned
out, the critical files may be corrupt or fragmented. these
are iralshl32 and url, both are dlls and you may need to run
a repair of Internet explorer.

Is the computer connected to the Internet via a LAN, Cable Modem,
DSL Modem, Dial-up account? Have you contracted with an Internet
Service Provider? Have you configured your computer per the ISP's
instructions? Have you contacted the ISP for assistance? What
precise troubleshooting steps have you already taken, and what were
the exact results of each?

No one can help if you don't provide even a modicum of information.

To add to the question, have you done a thorough scan for spyware,
adware, trojans and other nasties using a combination of good
anti-spyware programs?

It helps if you put some substance in the header of your message, not
just "help me" but a brief description of the problem.

Hi,
I know it's not a modem problem as I can access some websites in a
roundabout way! ie. by clicking on links in the search toolbar. It just
seems to be when I physically type in an address.

Hi,
Would you be mind giving me a rough idea of how to do this please? I am a
novice!

Have done a scan for spyware and nothings showing up.

Hi,

Check for valid entries for your LAN settings (tools/options/connections)
usually if your browser cant find anything its due to not being mapped to a
valid proxy or DNS server with your ISP

Hi,

Should I check the proxy server box?

thanks

Joanne, you should not check the proxy box unless you are using a proxy
server. If you are a home user with the usual Internet connection (and
you haven't told us what that is) such as dialup or broadband, you are
not using a proxy. Most Internet connectivity problems for home users
are caused by malware on the system. Without more information from you
as to how you connect to the Internet, if this is a single home
machine, and the name of your ISP, I can only give you general advice.
Start by doing the normal malware removal steps, as follows:

1) Scan in Safe Mode with current version (not earlier than 2003)
antivirus using updated definitions.

2) Remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-aware. These
programs are free, so use them both since they complement each other.
There is a new version of CWShredder from Intermute. I would not
install the other Intermute programs, however. Alternately, there are
CoolWebSearch malware removal steps at SilentRunners.

Be sure to update these programs before running, and it is a good idea
to do virus/spyware scans in Safe Mode. Make sure you are able to see
all hidden files and extensions (View tab in Folder Options).

HijackThis is an excellent tool to discover and disable hijackers, but
it requires expert skill. See below for HijackThis links. A combination
of HijackThis and About:Buster works well in removing the About:Blank
homepage hijacker. Again, this is an expert tool and novices should get
help with it.

3) If you are running Windows ME or XP, you should disable/enable System
Restore because malware will be in the Restore Points. With ME, you
must disable System Restore completely. With XP, you can delete all but
the most recent (presumably clean) System Restore point from the More
Options section of Disk Cleanup (Run>cleanmgr).

4) Make sure you've visited Windows Update and applied all security
patches. Do not install driver updates from Windows Update.

5) Run a firewall.

If, after you know your computer is 100% spyware and virus-free, you are
still having problems, go to your ISP's website from a working machine
and check for the correct connection settings. If you want more help,
don't hesitate to post back to this thread, but please include the
details we need to help you.

Run the following:

Start -> Run -> eventvwr.msc
or
Start -> Run -> eventvwr.exe

Either one of those will open the event viewer. Right click
on each of the three items listed and Clear the events listed.
If you want to save these as files, feel free to do so, esp.
if you see anything wierd there... :-)

After you've cleared all the events from the list, try to access
a website as normal through Internet Explorer.

After the failure, look through the event viewer and report
back with what turned up.
