Help! M Minolta 2300FDL speaks Japanese!

I noticed that my last attempt to print with my Minolta Magicolor
2300DL failed (the printer is still running, despite the fact it should
have gone into energy-saver mode) and when I looked at the status
display (difficult at the best of times) I saw the menu was in
Japanese. Now how on earth does one get the menu back in to English? I
can't read the commands for a start and have no idea how to start!

The nationality of most printers is set during its first installation and
written to the eprom. So during install of the drivers you should have
selected english as its native tongue. Once set, it may be a once
only setting, as some parts of eproms are often protected.
Try reinstalling the drivers, with a good uninstaller, then use it to
uninstall, then reinstall, just in case some registry setting tells it
to be Japanese. The reason for protected eprom areas is to prevent
changing things like the serial number, and critical calibration
settings. Not knowing its history there is no way of knowing if it ever
spoke english. Sometimes there are nation (target market) proms
which can only be replaced with the correct (english) ones, they can't
be overwritten.
If this fails you may need the manufacturers service utility and service
manual. There may be a link on the controller board to erase its
memory.

I think you press the Menu select key first then press the down arrow key, then
the right arrow key until the correct language appears then press the menu
select key.
I had to do this once ages ago and that is my recollection.
Alternatively on the 2300W you can reset the printer to factory default by
opening the front door and pressing the Cancel key for at least 20 seconds,
hopefully the default will be English, I don't know whether this will work on
the 2300DL. And if the printer is networked this reset may clear the network
settings, in that case you would have to re-enter them (once the control panel
is speaking English).
