Help: is it a cookie? how to delete privous typed information?

I have a problem with a particular website. I once submit my contact
information online in order to get some product information from this
company. However, recently when I try to checkout my shopping bag from this
website, my contact information automatically show up on its online form. I
never register an online account with this website. I'm surprised because I
always set my security setting to "empty emporary internet files when browser
is closed", and I clear up the cookies folder everyday.

I have tried to delete all the cookies and temporary internet files (from
both tools/internet option and from folder "Documents and Settings/local
setting). I closed my web browser and restart my computer, my information
still shows up when I attempt to checkout from this website. And its online
shopping bag never clears up despite I delete all the cookies and temporary
internet files (usually other websites' shopping bag will empty once cookies
and temporary internet files are deleted). I also cleared
"Content/Autocomplete forms".

I can't figure out what this website uses to keep remembering me even
through I deleted all the cookies and temporary internet files? How should I
let my personal information stop showing up? I feel my privacy is compromised
because this website obviously can track me everytime when I browsing their
website!

Btw, I'm using IE 6.0
Thanks,

What is the website and URL in question, please?

Is it a Secure Site (https://........)?

Have you placed the site in your Trusted Sites zone?

Copy/paste the following line into an IE Addressbar, click on GO, then
copy/paste the results into your reply:

javascript:navigator.appMinorVersion

Also state your Windows version.

The Autocomplete feature may be doing this to you. You didn't mention what
version of the browser you're using, but I'll assume v 6.0

Go into Tools/Internet Options, and select the Content Tab. Click on the
Autocomplete button. From the AutoComplete settings dialog, you can control
what is remembered by the system. The Clear Forms option might fix what
you're seeing.

Believe me, I've already done what you suggested below. Unfortunately, it
still doesn't work.
Is there any other ways to get rid of it?
Thanks.

The web site's Shopping Bag session appears to be IP-based. I visited the
page, blocked all cookies, selected one product and it appeared in Shopping
Bag. Closing the window and opening a new window, there is no indication of
anything in Shopping Bag...until I go to Shopping Bag: Then the item
selected previously appears. Nothing really strange or frightening about
that per se, and the same thing happens if I reboot.

When you go to the site, are you 'signed in' automatically or does your
'contact information' automatically appear without being signed in?

Hi,
Go to Control Panel> User Accounts> [YourName]> Manage my network passwords.
Remove information that you don't want to be saved in this way. Note:
Passport.net can share information with many sites.

Hope this helps,
Don

Do you see indications, Don, that usa.loccitane.com uses .NET Passport?

Hi, PA Bear

I didn't register their online account, so I never "sign in". I just use
"checkout without register" and my address/phone number automatically appear.
Did you try to do checkout without register and put some false address? I'm
sure next you attempt to checkout, your previously typed information will
automatically appear, even through you delete all the cookies and temporary
internet files.

Nope. But I was helping someone (new to WinXP) with this about a year ago
and he reported that removing Passport from his User Account stopped one
particular website from recognizing him and filling in his e-mail address.
The site had no obvious connection to Microsoft, MSN or Passport.

So you're not automatically "signed in" but your data still appears?
Assuming no credit card data appears, I've not be too concerned. They may
have garnered the information from your earlier correspondence with them.

[FWIW I have no idea how it works, but it does. The other day I had
occasion to use the online Contact Us form to inquire about a problem with
my Harper's Magazine subscription. Now, I'd never contacted this site or
Harper's before online or via email: The prompt said something like, "Just
enter any email address you use, whether you've used it here before or not."
I entered my Hotmail addy, hit the Send button and instantaneously a screen
appeared with my full name and address. <doh> ]

The strangest thing is how the website identify me without me typing anything
(email adreess, name...) that can identifies me? I did remember that I
filled their online category request form once, but it was a long long time
ago, and I didn't register any username account... I use dialup connection,
so the IP address always changes. Fortunately, I never place an order through
the website, so my credit card information won't actomatically appears.
I guess they must use something similar to "cookie" to track the users, the
information that I gave early might be saved on a file somewhere on my hard
disk and if I visit their website later, the file might be retrieve to
identify me. I'm not an internet expert and have limited knowledge, I have no
idea how this might works. Just curious what else might function like this
besides "cookie"? Most online merchadise websites use "cookie" to retrieve
information and they can be easily cleaned up. This website is a rare case,
though.

That would be your AutoComplete for forms values showing.
E.g. you previously visited another site which used the same
names for the fields that that one is using and entered your
information in them. Unfortunately, the retrieval of the information
is not dependent on the site name of the page. That being the case
I wonder why they even bother saving the URL that those field names
were originally associated with. This explains how it is possible to
make an inventory of all your saved information, provided you know
only all the field names which it is saved under--just make an HTML
page which uses them all.

E.g. in the case of a Harper's page we see two form tags
one with input area name="query" and another with name="email".
Those seem non-unique and sure enough, using CursorDown (only)
within them shows me a multitude of previous uses with both,
especially the query name.

Are you saying that in this case it is because the Autocomplete forms? Please
take a look at my original post and my previous replies. I've stated several
times that I've already clearned up the "AutoComplete forms". Besides, I
never turn on the "AutoComplete" function, so it is nothing to do with the
"AutoComplete".
