HELP !!!!! IE GONE

W

wdthornton

I had a major crash. When I did a complete reinstall and installed all the
programs I had before, everything worked fine for several months. Then after
a security update from microsoft, IE disappeared from my computer. I did a
search and no files were found !!!!! I downloaded the latest version. It
downloaded and installed as normal, but when install finished nothing came
up. I did another search and no files at all. I need IE to do a couple
programs I run. What can be wrong???????? I use FireFox as my default
browser and everything has been ok for long time. What can I do to get IE
back?????????

Scan your computer for malware & viruses. When/if the computer is clean,
download & re-install Internet Explorer.

http://www.tipandtrick.net/2008/res...rnet-explorer-desktop-icon-in-windows-xp-sp3/

Here is how to get that desktop shortcut icon back:

1. Click Start, Run.

2. Type regedit.exe.

3. Navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel
(wrapped for easy reading)

Note: If HideDesktopIcons and NewStartPanel do not exist, create new
registry keys for them.

4. In the right hand pane, double-click
{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D} key.

If the registry value name does not exist, create a new DWORD value and
name it as {871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}

5. Enter dword value data as 0 to enable the Internet Explorer icon on
the Desktop.

For users who are using Classic Start Menu, replace NewStartPanel with
ClassicStartMenu instead so that the registry key location is as follow:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\ClassicStartMenu (wrapped for easy reading)

Other steps are exactly the same with the above. Refresh the desktop
after change to display the IE desktop icon.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

If you would rather not do the above, there should be a .reg file called
reset_ie_icon.reg that will automatically accomplish all of the above.

Also, it appears that Kelly has a reg file on her excellent site that
does the same thing called sp3iefix.reg:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Line #408, right-hand side.

It seems like when you upgraded to SP3, the desktop shortcut icon went
bye-bye.

Another way to bring up IE:

Windows Key + R
type "iexplore" (without the quotation marks)
Enter (or OK)

HTH.

That was uncalled for. I've read quite a few posts here where his

Judging from some of your recent posts (over the past few moths) you
seem to have become quite irritable lately. Is it time for you to

If you are using Firefox as your default browser, why do you want to get IE
back? Haven't you noticed that when you have a problem with IE (or with
Windows XP or
Vista) you have to read 100s of Microsoft's kb articles to resolve these
problems. Pig-Bear keeps a database of articles which he can copy and paste
easily because he knows that M$'s operating system is crap and his database
invariably comes to help to resolve problems.
